An Encounter with Simone Weil
Post-Film Discussion with Julia Haslett, Producer/Director/Editor

Mid-Atlantic Premiere
Special Founder's Prize, Michael Moore's Traverse City Film Festival 2011
French philosopher, teacher and activist Simone Weil (1909-1943) once wrote, “Attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity.” Born into a wealthy, secular Jewish Parisian family, Weil spent her short life advocating for the poor and disenfranchised. She fought in the Spanish Civil War, worked as a machine operator and farm laborer, debated Trotsky, taught high school students and union members, and was part of the French Resistance. Using rare archival footage and photographs, excerpts from Weil’s writings, intimate vérité footage of the filmmaker’s family and, ultimately, an actress to conjure Weil, the filmmaker herself confronts questions of moral responsibility within her own family and the broader context of 21st Century America.
